Cardinal Climber – Ipomoea x multifida

This Cardinal Climber – Ipomoea x multifida picture is of the first blooms from the plant grown from seeds that we previously posted about. We put a few plants and seeds in a hanging basket and now they are growing in every direction. We haven’t seen any of our hummingbirds go to it yet but the blooms just started. We’ll make another post about this plant as it progresses.

First hummingbird picture of 2011

Hummingbird at our feeder

Not a great picture but we have our first hummingbird picture of 2011 and definitely happy to see hummingbirds visiting our garden. Still didn’t get that new camera we talked about in an earlier post but hopefully will soon. We put the feeder up about April 17th and it took about a week and a half for us to see our first hummingbird. First week we had a male visit on an off and by the second week we’ve seen a couple of females almost every day.

We also put a new hummingbird plant in our garden this year, bee balm ( Monarda – Jacob Cline). We’ll make a post about it once we can get some photos. My husband says he sees hummingbirds feeding at this plant in other gardens all the time.

Our Porterweed and Cardinal Climber seedlings

Porterweed and Cardinal Climber seedlings

This picture is of our Porterweed and Cardinal Climber seedlings. We made a post about them back in January and this is our first update. The larger fern like plant is the Cardinal Climber and it took about a week to a week and a half  for the seeds to germinate. Those smaller are the Porterweed and it took them almost five weeks or better to start growing. Maybe it shouldn’t have taken that long for the Porterweed seeds. It’s possible we didn’t do it quite the right way. We plan to keep updating the progress on these two plants throughout the season and maybe we can get lucky enough to get a picture with a hummingbird feeding on their flowers.

Our Porterweed and Cardinal Climber seeds have arrived

Our Porterweed and Cardinal Climber seeds have arrived. We purchased our seeds online from Onalee Seeds & Plants. The ordering process was very easy, highly efficient and we got our seeds in a couple of days. Reason we got the Porterweed seeds is because we keep seeing pictures of hummingbirds feeding on this plant. We’re not really sure how the Porterweed is going to work for the hummingbirds but from what we have read this is a can’t miss plant for butterflies. As for the Cardinal Climber we are going to try it in a large hanging basket on our deck, looks and sounds like a good hummingbird plant. We’ll make future posts on how these plants turn out. If anybody has any experience or information about these plants we would be happy to hear from you.

Making plans for the hummingbird migration

Winter is the perfect time for making plans for the hummingbird migration in the Spring. Here are a few suggestions. Reading up on the type of flowers you may want to have in your garden this year. Possibly purchasing seeds to get the plants you want ready for an early start. Get any new hummingbird feeders so they’ll be up and ready for when the hummingbirds arrive.

Hummingbird feeders make great inexpensive gift ideas for the hummingbird lover

The first hummingbird feeder picture below is the feeder we use. They’re easy to clean and fill. Our hummingbirds really like them. The second hummingbird feeder is a window feeder. We don’t own one of these yet but as soon as we can figure out where to put one we’re going to get one.

If you’re interested in getting either of these feeders or want more information about them you can click on the picture or link below it.

Our hummingbird season is over.

The last hummingbird we saw this year was on September 21st, which was a week later than they usually leave. We took down our two feeders about 2 weeks after the 21st. We still had a few flowers blooming at that time but still never saw any more hummingbirds. Overall this was a good season for us, we saw 2 or 3 hummingbirds every day and never had the normal lull while they’re nesting. Looking forward to next year when they return and we’re already planning to try a few new plants for them. Some we’re going to try and grow from seeds during the winter. We’ll let you know how that turns out in future posts.

Hummingbird and violet flower coaster set

This hummingbird and violet flower coaster set is a gift you could give to somebody anytime. Would be an especially nice housewarming gift since everybody can use a coaster set. Another option would be to just purchase it for yourself to enjoy.

Hummingbird and violet flower coaster set

I think this is a really pretty coaster set which combines both a love of flowers and hummingbirds. Coasters are made from plastic and have a non-slip cork bottom. Their size is approximately 3.5″ (8.9cm) x 3.5″ (8.9cm) x 0.2″ (0.5cm). They are sold as a set of four.

Hummingbird feeding on Salvia – Black and Blue

My husband and I took this picture last weekend on our deck. The point and shoot camera that we have takes very good pictures of stationary objects but we don’t get real good pictures of moving objects or anything at a distance. We are saving our money and doing a lot of research and hopefully we’ll be able to get a beginners DSLR camera to take better pictures for our blog and flower  web site. If anybody out there has an opinion on a camera for us we would welcome your input.
